Featured Volunteer: Mike & Sara

Already this year Mike and Sara have come to the rescue! This dyno-duo stays busy in retirement and also has to fight traffic to make it to our Rockville warehouse...but when we send up the Bike Signal, they answer. This photo (with them on the left) was from an MLK Day event at the warehouse a few years ago. It was their first time to the warehouse, but not the last.

We don't often offer weekend volunteer sessions because we have so many groups and volunteers coming through the warehouse during the week. There's not always much to do on the weekends. But when there is, it's usually an emergency. Meaning, we didn't get much done the week before, or a huge shipment of bikes came in...and now we don't have room for bikes the next week. In those cases, Yvette is usually in a panic to find help.

Early in January, that actually wasn't the case. Given how the holidays fell this year, we had less help at the end of the year, giving us a heads up that we needed to schedule something on the weekend early in January to help clear some floor space. It wasn't advertised because we had a few families already signed up, BUT when both of those fell through at the last minute up went the Bike Signal again.

There was no hesitation, we called Mike and Sara and we were in luck, they weren't traveling and they were able to squeeze in a couple hours in the warehouse. They even brought a friend! Now that's dedication. And it was a huge help to us to get so many bikes ready for the next shipment, that happened just three days later. AND we made some room for more bikes!

Mike and Sara have also helped out with the recycling event in Arlington last year, since it's harder to get up to the warehouse. We got over 200 bikes at that event so they definitely stayed busy. It's so awesome to have volunteers like Mike and Sara who are up for anything and stay flexible to help where needed. Sara even came last year during probably the hottest day of the year...we definitely had fans blowing in every direction and still left sweat soaked.Hey, if you want to help out on the coldest, we have a loading scheduled this week, wink wink.
