Featured Volunteer: Junior's Dad

This month's Featured Volunteer has a name and it's Dave. And he's not a dog, he's a real volunteer. But he's also Junior's Dad. Junior IS a dog. A rescue dog, previously known as Dexter. And we think Dave is amazing, not just for his skills in the shop, but because he rescued a dog from the shelter!

Dave came to us a couple years ago, first as a donor. He and his wife are avid bikers and bikers always have 'stuff'. He asked his local shop where he could donate some old bike stuff and he found us. And then he came back, as a volunteer. Almost as soon as we got him trained in the shop he stopped coming for a couple weeks.

He and his wife aren't just bikers, they are dog parents. And their old girl who stood watch over their kids as they were growing up, was feeling her age. At a time when they lost their furry family member, we were busy bringing in shelter shop dogs, which can be bitter sweet when you lose a dog.

RIP Sweet old girl

Over time, Dave would come in once or twice a week and knock down our pile of parts bikes, and start asking Yvette about the dogs she walks at Montgomery County Animal Shelter. They weren't ready, but also canine curious. Yvette would bring stories and photos and videos of all the superstar dogs. And finally they reluctantly started visiting MCASAC to see the dogs. Reluctantly because they are the kind of people who don't want to leave any dog behind.

They were suckers for the pitties, and they are in no short supply at MCASAC. They took a look at a handful of potential dogs and finally settled on Dexter who they renamed Junior. And they absolutely cannot imagine a time without him. He's the BEST bad dog, they say.

And now Junior gets to go on many amazing adventures with his new parents. We get to see pics and try to guess where he is now...which also means Dave isn't in the shop those couple weeks :( And every now and again Junior stops in for a visit and knocks Yvette on the ground with his broad chest.

So yeah, Dave is an awesome volunteer but he's even a greater hooman! Just ask Junior.
