Rewarding Service Projects for clubs
The Potomac (MD) Rotary Club, for example, has co-sponsored a Bikes for the World collection with the Interact Club at Thomas Wootton High School (Rockville MD) over nearly a decade. The Waldorf (MD) Kiwanis Club has executed an annual collection over the same period.
Meanwhile, the Glenwood (MD) Lions Club and the local elementary school's Leo Club have carried out several bike collections in recent years.
Bike collections provide club members with an opportunity to work together on a common project. They are guaranteed to be something that a sponsored student service group can relate to and "get into." And they help fulfill club obligations to support an international project, while at the same time getting the club's name out in the local community.
Loadings also offer a rewarding experience for groups and can be scheduled in connection with a collection or as a sole project. Loading opportunities are fun and range in skill from easy to moderate. Bikes for the World ships about 20 containers a year each filled with over 500 bicycles destined for our partner projects overseas such as The Village Bicycle Project in Ghana and FINCA Costa Rica. Volunteers are needed to help roll bikes onto these 40 foot shipping containers. Duties include rolling bikes onto the container, stacking bikes in the container, and processing bikes, whichever role best suits your ability. There is something for everyone! Training and guidance is available from a BfW staffer. See some examples below. Schedule your group to assist a loading.
