A Bikes for the World bike collection is an ideal service activity for faith communities.
- It helps the disadvantaged and protects the environment – God's creation.
- It appeals to members of all ages, male and female – there are roles for everyone – planning, publicity, welcoming the public, simple work with tools, and physical labor.
- It builds teamwork, fellowship, and community.
- It appeals to the broader public – potential donors who have bikes and will bring them to your event--and gets your name out in the community.
Bikes for the World is ecumenical. We work with churches and meetings, synagogues and temples--a diverse range of faith communities. We work with confirmation classes, bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs (and Mitzvah Days), young adult groups, men's groups.
We began collecting bikes in 1995 with two churches – St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Columbia MD) and the Herndon (VA) Friends Meeting. These two congregations have collected annually and uninterruptedly since then – netting close to 2,000 bicycles each over the 18 years through 2012. We, and they, must be doing something right!
