Scout Support

Senthil Kannan EagleOn April 28, 2013 Senthil Kannan of troop 1983 was awarded the prestigious Eagle scout rank. Senthil completed his Eagle scout project with Bikes for the World last fall at REI Fairfax. He collected over 75 bikes, managed a group of about 20, and oversaw the financial aspect and coordination of the entire event.

Several other scouts in troop 1983 became aware of Bikes for the World and showed interest in working on a similar project with BfW in the future. We hope to invite the troop out to Pentagon City this summer for a loading.

Some of the bikes Senthil collected were likely shipped to the Philippines to an education project in the village of Maribojoc, adjacent to Baclayon where the pilot project took place. The bikes shipped last November by BfW are currently in a warehouse in Manila awaiting the start of the school year when they will be tranported to the island of Bohol for the students selected for this program. The first group of students selected for this progam and in their final year of school all successfully graduated last spring.

Bikes for the World saw cooperation from several scout troops in recent big number collections. In Stevensville Maryland troop 495 helped advertise, collect, process, and load almost 100 bikes in the first collection ever held on Kent Island.

The same weekend a young BfW volunteer, Michael Dillard, managed his first collection at Spokes Etc. in Ashburn. He invited a girl scout troop to come out to help wrench bikes during his event. Michael received over 100 bikes at this collection.

Read more about both collections on our blog.
