James McMullen

Bikes for the World is honored to be chosen as the beneficiary in lieu of flowers to recognize the life, adventure, and teaching spirit of James McMullen who left the earth on May 29, 2015 due to an aggressive form of liver cancer. James Daryl McMullen is described by friends as "authentic and loyal with a passion for discovery and life."

Jim led a life filled with excitement, starting with a two year stint (1965-67) in the Philippines as part of the early years of the Peace Corps. His love of long hikes and boating grew, and a lifelong camaraderie formed with a very closely knit group of friends from the Peace Corps days.

Donations in his honor can be applied directly to our Bikes for Education program established in the Philippines. This program helps rural students in the Philippines attend school and graduate. Please designate your donation in memory of James McMullen and if you'd like to contribute to the Philippines program specifically please put PHILIPPINES in the designation box on the donation form.

Born August 3, 1942, James McMullen was raised on the coast of Oregon. His sense of adventure was enhanced by seeing the lights of boats at anchor and wondering where they may be headed. Nearby Neahkahnie Mountain beckoned to him as a boy and after many hikes there he grew to love mountain climbing in addition to boating.

From 1967-1997, he was an inspiring science and physics teacher at McKinley Tech in Washington, DC. His love of photography was the impetus for starting a popular after-school photography club at the school.

On one of his intrepid journeys, Jim and his wife Betty Scott rode their bicycles across the United States in 1990 from their home in Silver Spring, MD to Wheeler, OR where he grew up. At age 65, with a group of five men (three of them Peace Corps friends) Jim rode from St. Augustine, FL to San Diego, CA.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations  be made in his name to Bikes for the World. Please designate the Philippines as the country.
